    A number of “foreign” car companies have located in the American south because they can come in, offer good salaries and benefits comparable to the region, and thus match what the unions might get. There IS a difference when companies do care about employees. Unions are most effective when corporations (hmm, like Boeing currently) are looking for ways to avoid providing valid salaries and benefits to their long-standing employees working where COL is much higher than in the south.

    Not surprisingly, the news today is that VW management in Germany is using the fact that the Republicans meddled in their private business (they WANTED the union, remember) to question whether they’ll ever open a factory in the South again.
