Well I’ve never seen Show Boat on Broadway, but I have seen both movie versions. After much thought, I eventually purchased the 1936 b/w version with Irene Dunne, Alan Jones, Charles Winninger, Paul Robeson and Hattie McDaniel. The reason why I purchased this version is because it is said to be the most faithful version to the stage version. Paul Robeson sang Old Man River.
The 1951 color version starred Katherine Grayson, Ava Gardner, Howard Keel, Agnes Moorehead, Joe E. Brown and William Warfield who sang Old Man River in this version. This one is not so faithful to the stage musical, but still has quite a fine cast. I may still yet purchase this version one day.
