You set an example by being around children, not being absent.

I believe the other day Evie said something about heading south for the winter. It’s not forever. Quit being so selfish and take care of the house and kids yourself, Val.

They are a bunch of co-dependant whiners also known at the ‘ME’ generation with no consideration or respect for anyone but themselves because they have been ‘given into’ all their lives and not told ‘NO’. Give me the days when a person under 30 knew that an adult(older person than themselves) knew what was going(and had gone)on in the world and were respected for that knowledge and the passing down of same rather than a—‘Yeah, right grandpa’ ! !

Y’know, there are plenty of grandparents who live too far from their children to do more than see the grandkids once a year. Evie’s been around for Val most of the time, but dang it all, sthe raised one family and now she’s due some “Me Time”.

Heesh. Evie has given plenty to the grandkids. My take on it is that she has every right to live her life as she sees fit.

I love this comic but not this strip. Evie’s reply is rude “Glad I’m not you”. Really? That’s pretty harsh.

As to the comments about being “present” or not, please recall that up until the suburb era, most families and generations lived very close to each other (or with each other) and so shared in the every day lives of each other.

I don’t see anything wrong with Evie going off on these adventures. It’s her life and she lived it in a way to be able to afford the experience — including sharing a home with Val, a situation that benefits them both. However, since we’ve seen the Evie is part of “how” the family lives their lives, it would be nice if Evie included Val earlier in her planning/thinking.

Looks like Evie is going on another trip and leaving the family behind in the near future.

Evie is the reason I read this cartoon. A breath of fresh air in a selfish cartoon world. O and by the way, I live in South Africa and it is not that dangerous.

Lucyfur, I think you are partly right…Val also is going to miss her Mom’s presence. What I am wondering is: where does Evie get the Money to do all this volunteering? Just paying the airfare to S. Africa would break my bank…that is if I Had a bank! She must have some retirement fund… ;)
