Exactly. Jesus didn’t just give fish and bread to the hungry. He didn’t turn over the tables of the money lenders. He didn’t heal the sick who had no insurance. Not Jesus.

Shockingly I agree with you sir. The pope telling people to be charitable, telling corporations to be charitable, is not the same as telling government to take peoples money and give it to others.

The point is PEOPLE, individuals should care about others, take care of others, love others. Government is a different beast.

Render unto Caesar what is Caesar’s, render unto God what is God’s

_ I am sick and tired of the “government” extorting what I have worked all of my life to earn and save, and give it to the generation after generation of parasites…_And there we have the message of modern conservatism in a nutshell: If you’re poor, it’s your own fault & you deserve to suffer.

There was a time — say during the Middle Ages — when central governments were generally weak but the Church was strong — in fact it was the dominant social institution. During that period the Church was the primary source of “charity”. Time passed, things changed, and the Church became less important and central governments became the dominant social institutions. No surprise, governments started to take over “charity”. Those who say that “charity” or “welfare” should be run by churches and not by governments are thinking about the institutions of a society that disappeared hundreds of years ago.

@DrCanuck @ansonia ansonia said, “Did Jesus take fish from people who had fish and give it to the people who didn’t have fish?”

    Yes. Loaves, too.

Fish and loaves freely offered up, not confiscated. That’s what sets “charity” apart from income redistribution.

I didn’t see anything about race or racist in what Doctor Warbucks said. Do you believe that anyone who wants to choose who they help is automatically racist?

DaSharkie says, “Read the scripture. He did not TAKE. He asked what his disciples had. He did not TAKE it. He multiplied it.”

The multiplier effect works for government welfare as well. Every dollar in welfare gets spent over and over.

Lester is always and invariably deeply nasty. I don’t mind a good critique — everyone needs a little critique now and again — but Lester is just a sourpuss.

Thanks for the lively discussion but if capitalism is so bad how does His Holiness explain the existence of The Vatican?

Hmm, they build airplanes, cars, and have J Crew, Starbucks, and a Microsoft “campus” at the Vatican?? I understand the “profit making” of the church has been long standing, just as Deseret Industries is the tax-protected corporate wing of the Mormon Church, but: I think Pope Francis has actually read the scriptures, believes in them, and is trying to do some good in the world, and I’m not Roman Catholic (or Christian/Jew/or Muslim) for that matter.

Francis is frankly, trying to teach the world to “fish” for some ethics, and morality. That’s not exactly bad leadership of the flock, even if Murdoch and WSJ types hate the message.

I think you are absolutely correct. The history of “the Vatican” is kind of complicated, but probably the word is most often used to mean the Papacy (though the Popes haven’t always lived in the Vatican, or even in Italy, for that matter.) The wealth and power of the Papacy goes back a long long time, whereas capitalism is fairly modern. Just how modern depends on your definition. If capitalism includes mercantilism, maybe it goes back to the 16 century, but if it’s really the modern market, it’s a century or so later. Evidently the first person to use the term was Marx, in the second half of the 19th century. At any rate, Catholicism predates capitalism and will probably outlast it.

Gospel of Mark:23 And it came to pass, that he went through the corn fields on the sabbath day; and his disciples began, as they went, to pluck the ears of corn.24 And the Pharisees said unto him, Behold, why do they on the sabbath day that which is not lawful?25 And he said unto them, Have ye never read what David did, when he had need, and was an hungred, he, and they that were with him?26 How he went into the house of God in the days of Abiathar the high priest, and did eat the shewbread, which is not lawful to eat but for the priests, and gave also to them which were with him?27 And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath:28 Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.+Whose corn was this, anyway? And when David ate the showbread, who owned that? Not David.

All these years I’ve been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends// note gave me not that was my goat
