Read it as her back side for the first minute :). And it still made sense that he wanted to be around when she left to see it.
Maybe it just goes to show how much I was paying attention (or wasn’t), but I can’t recall her ever having gone away, either. So I’m just as puzzled as Lennie is — rather, was, since this was a while ago.
