In those days no respectable woman would be seen in public unless she was covered from neck to toes. The only women who wore cosmetics were either on the stage or prostitutes. Today, a woman won’t hesitate to be seen in public in a Bikini. But she wouldn’t dare go out without makeup.

@nighthawks, I think it’s an exaggeration to compare it to the Taliban. Strict Muslim countries cover the face as well, and at least the hair.
(If babies had the right to vote, the past 40 years would have been different.)
