Somewhere I saw an explanation of that Japanese cat thing.In the West we gesture “Come on” with palm up and wiggling fingers, but in East Asia the gesture is made with the hand raised and palm down. Those little cat statues are actually inviting patrons to enter whatever the establishment is.
