Seems to me Max was in the picture (literally) long before Wally and Joan even started going together, maybe even before Wally was a character in the strip.

    About Stone Soup

Jan Eliot’s funny and irreverent Stone Soup follows the saga of an extended, blended family, starring two working-mom sisters living just across the fence from each other. Val and Joan share life with their opinionated mother, a middle-school diva and 10-year-old tomboy, a reclusive teenage boy, a wild preschooler and his new baby sister…and of course Wally, the ultimate nice guy who steps into his stepdad shoes with grace amid the chaos. Working-parent hassles, pre-school tantrums, middle-school angst, love and the single mom… it’s all here in Stone Soup.

One of my father-in-law’s friends, who had been a football pro back in his day, nearly gave us all heart attacks when he scooped up our baby and gave her a ride on his shoulders. He was about 62, fast and tall, and the door arches in the house relatively low-lying, but since he’d been a pro and had good depth perception and all, nothing bad happened.

The menfolk here both do that without anyone on their shoulders—doorframes only come to 6’8". Ducking is a way of life when you’re taller than that.
