I’m sorry, I get tired of the month of “Gotta Love August” strips every year. And I agree with others on the lack of a true summer break any more. It’s the only time in their lives when kids can just be kids and enjoy unstructured time, and we seem determined to take that away from them. And before someone starts in on the “but they forget so much over a long break,” remember that we sent man to the moon without computers, so apparently this is a relatively new problem.
August in Texas is a 5th season all to itself. The temp this week goes from 101 today to 105 Wednesday and mostly will be 100 or above most of the month……….looking forward to the END of September when cool weather shows up again.
. I’m not at all fond of the “Gotta love August” strips either. Who loves night-time lows around 90 degrees? This week is shaping up to be all 100 degree plus days. Yuck!!
Wow, in which parts of the country is school starting again already? I live just below our local Elementary school here in Bucks County, PA, and I think they start the day after Labor Day and no earlier than maybe a week before.
Aw hell, not the ‘gotta love August’ thing AGAIN??!! I hated it the first time because it was SO OVERDONE! I think I’ll nix Stone Soup from my strip lineup for this month. I’ll wait til September to come around.
This hill is not as high as it looks because Holly is wearing sandals and she hasn’t started complaining about her feet yet. It’s probably just a look-out point on a day-trip.
I agree that August has its drawbacks for some states (like in Florida, here), but I like the “You Gotta Love August” strips, because it’s fun seeing how everyone is enjoying him- or herself, and it’s nice seeing everyone happy. There are some comics that I flat don’t care for (“Watch Your Head,” “Lio,” and “Dog Eat Doug,” for example), and I don’t look at those when I’m reading the comics in Tampa Bay Times.
Here in KS we went through a draught, now we have received much needed rain. Our main lake we need for water is feeling up.Since metro area of KS passed bond for schools to have a/c the local district started school 8/14, exception for one school district a major storm took the roof off a school, damaged classroom and computer technology. That school been postphoned for one or two months. We have been gaining more water and loving it. Others not so flooded basements cased flooding and water damage.
Here in Sheboygan, the kids start school the day after Labor Day. Also, we had one week of humid 90s and since then it’s only been in the 70s. I think my tomatoes would like it a little warmer, myself. They are taking forever to ripen this year. What I don’t like about August is that the encroaching darkness becomes more obvious. It’s still dark at 5am now and and gradually getting darker earlier in the evening, too.
I’m in NE TN and my granddaughter started back to school TODAY! I absolutely HATE the fact that they have to go back so early! They let them out for “race day”- that’s when NASCAR has their second race at Bristol! Can you believe that!? Sometimes they have to close school due to the heat in August. Apparently there are still some schools within the county that don’t have A/C.
Stone Soup’s family of characters must live near the Cascade Mountains…it Is possible to take day-trips up there…just have to watch out for unstable snow…the Colorado Rockies are the same… I like the “August” series, makes me long for days long past when one got to do what usually couldn’t be done during the school year, even if all one got to do was travel through books without Having to read them! (I used to practically Live at our local library during the summer).
Thank you, thank you thank you. I wait all year for the “Gotta Love August” series and look at them on my wall at work the other 11 months. They are great to enjoy when there is four feet of snow outside.
In Wisconsin, it’s been in the 70s during the day and down to the high 50s at night. I’m glad I don’t live where it only gets down to the 90s at night. Yikes.

School should NEVER start before Labor Day. I know that’s heresy these days, but I stand by it.
