Hill AFB is positioned in just such a fashion that the pilots stationed there can train in a wide variety of terrain types all at once: ocean (the Great Salt Lake), forest, desert, mountain, urban, and snow. []3. Tooele Army Depot and Dugway Proving Grounds were created to take advantage of the fact that the southwestern corner of the state is desert. []4. The church actually blocked an attempt by the Reagan Administration to establish an ICBM base in the state on the basis that they didn’t want Utah tied to the military machine any more than it already was.
