My best guess is that this is a play on the last name. Dunces are the academically challenged. The “humor” then would be in his mother’s question. How could a “Dunce” have a good day at school.
“Pointy dunce hats” were once used in schools to punish and humiliate students in front of their peers. The teacher would make a student wear them when they felt the student wasn’t meeting their academic standards. I’m 60 years old & this happened “before my time”, but I have seen it on some old black & white T.V. shows.
