That name is so white, why not a real african-american name like Sha’Quandra or Jaki’Niqua?

We have two families in our church from Tanzania. Clara, Albert, Yvonne and Anthony. You should hear what Clara has to say about “Scrabble tile” names.

I would be interested to know what “acting/talking white” is. My pastor is black and he speaks american/english just fine. He was married and had all his children in wedlock, worked a job to support his family. If this is “acting white” then some people have a problem. They also need to read their black history. Most blacks hammered it into their kids that getting an education was the only way out of poverty. The prejudices they had to overcome, and some still are, made them better people and much less prejudice. They learned to see people as people not skin colors unlike the likes of J. Jackson and A. Sharpton, along with many white political figures just to get vote. Very sad.

There was a tv documentary series on last fall about a group of dancers and one white girl from the the Midwest was named “Taneisha”, which sounds like what some people are calling “African-American names”.

lavacuba: If a naming pattern exists within a culture, then the names can be identified by the name of the culture. They may not be what some of us would consider standard names, but they are still names. What about Bobbi Jo, Billie May and so on? I think most of us would assume the women are Southern and white.

Try translating some of those “European” names into plain English like we did with those of indigenous tribes and see how ridiculous it sounds. – Son of a Short Warrior adept at Aligning Fibers for Spinning.
