Working at McDonald’s was one of my first after school jobs.
During that ancient time, you had to put the potatoes into a potato skinning machine, wash them and stick a fork into each one and insert it into the cutter one at a time.
We actually had a multi-blade cutter that you would stick a large fresh potato into, pull the arm down and voila after several attempts you have fries ready to cook.
On the other hand, so to speak, you could lose a finger doing that.
Even worse was having to haul up from the basement fifty or more pound bags of potatoes. When we got tired of cutting and hauling potatoes, we would break the cutter somehow and go outside to smoke.
You could also vary the amount of coke syrup that you put into the cups. I made some mighty sweet cokes in those long ago days. My dentist of today is putting his kids through college thanks to me.
All of that for eighty cents an hour. Gas was only twenty cents a gallon however. I would often stop on the side of the road to collect empty pop bottles to redeem for two cents each. That is how I paid for my gas.
In the early 60’s, this was McDonald’s jingle:47 cents for a three course mealat McDonald’s, the drive-in with the golden arches.
Finally my best friend, Junior and I got fired for fighting with the customers in the parking lot. We thought that we were bad asses.
After that, all we could do was to go on and play rock and roll with some of the best names in show biz. Junior is gone now, but I still rock on from time to time.
The food was much, much better then. Now it tastes like cardboard, especially the fries.
In and Out is no better. I dont care what the hard core In and Out fans say. I was in San Francisco a year ago and the chow was no better there, In fact, it was awful. Five Guys burgers are not too bad but overpriced and the fries are too greasy for me.

I remember the 15¢ BLT, if you were short on cash they would leave off the bacon and your bill was only 10¢. Of course I only made 50¢ per hour then.

I remember my first McDonald’s hamburger. Fifteen cents. One bite and and I threw it in the trash and haven’t been back since.
