    The tea-party is like that body in the water tank in LA. Polluting everything. Bigots, fools, haters. But we have to allow them to exist, no matter how loathsome they become.

    Definition of the Tea Party Movement from Wikipedia: “The Tea Party movement is an American political movement that advocates strict adherence to the United States Constitution, reducing U.S. government spending and taxes, and reduction of the U.S. national debt and federal budget deficit.” Which of these does Mr. Bennett hate, and why?

    @Rickopolis, I visited a tea party meeting in Northern Virginia to meet some of them first-hand. They were average, nice, intelligent people, including several of African and Hispanic descent, and when I asked them, the items listed in the definition above were the only issues their group was organized to address. Why do you call them bigots, fools, and haters? How many have you met? It seems like many tea-party-haters are the bigots and haters, prejudiced against tea party supporters without justification.

    Strawman- Define a terrible Fictional character and put a label on it and then beat it up. Sounds like Clay. Rich Democrats should stop hiding under the table and volunteer right now to be taxed more.

    When the “TEA party” got started, there were actually a few fairly rational people involved, they’ve all left in disgust at where it’s gone.

    Right. You can’t find smart people in the tea party, because to believe that crap, you have to suspend belief in reality.

    @jdlambert:

    Seriously? You’re depending on Wikipedia for a valid definition of today’s Tea Party? One most likely generated by the phonies themselves?

    So how come every self-described “Tea Party” member I’ve met (and I’ve met a LOT) claims to want less govt. but then complains that “Obama’s going to destroy my Medicare”? How come they have ALL been Trump fans and parrot every birther conspiracy that’s ever been? How come they claim that Obama is a Communist/Marxist/Kenyan/Muslim/radical black Christian? How come they all voted for Bush twice and never met a war they didn’t just tearily wave the flag for (except when Obama has to finish what they started. Then all of a sudden it’s “evil”)? Please note that most of them start howling at the idea of any military cuts.

    Remember how these folks were just brimming with orgasmic patriotism in 2010 when they dressed up in Revolutionary War garb and had tea bags hanging from their hats? They were all too young to have served in WWII, thereby learning their worship of the military without understanding its harsh realities, and too old to have served in Vietnam. They have always been completely out of touch regarding war and govt. spending, but have profited nicely from the very policies they deride as “socialist”. You know, taxes that paid for the nice roads, schools and infrastructure they enjoyed prior to Reagan. The benefits of booming economy that enabled them to own houses and raise kids on one income.

    Play acting is all very nice, but then comes the train of reality barreling down the tracks.

    Granted, there have been a very few original members who know that most American wars have been unnecessary and wasteful in terms of lives and money, who didn’t vote for Bush. But those are rare, and their remaining in today’s Tea Party is akin to tilting at windmills. Today’s Tea Party is simply Bircherism Redux. If you want to know the truth, just Google “Koch Brothers” and their family history. This is what Ron Paul’s original laudable idea has devolved into.

    Also, what’s to hate about the definition? The idea that this out of touch group of Americans claims to know what “strict adherence to the Constitution” means. Kind of like fundamentalists regarding the Bible. Very little awareness of nuance/uncomfortable truths or critical thinking involved. Just a claim to be part of the “right” group. The decline of this idiocy is much to be desired, and right on schedule.
