In the North Pacific, overfishing herring has affected the Stellar Sea Lions. When they can’t find herring, they eat the same amount of pollack or squid, which has less nutrition. They lose weight, their pups die and sometimes they die of malnutrition.http://www.marinemammal.org/research/effect_body.php
@ConserveGovChasing short term profits instead of long term sustainability is a good way to lose in the long run. We’re now paying over $15 a pound for what used to be considered junk fish due to over fishing the prime species.
As a kid, we could literally walk across the backs of spawning salmon in several streams in western Washington near my home. Not a single salmon now comes back to those streams. Sharks are being destroyed along with cod and rockfish fisheries. ONce “trash fish” were used for fertilizer, now they’re substituted in restaurants for tuna, snapper and other “prime” fish in collapse. We’ve eaten, and poisoned, our way into deep trouble, and that includes climate change resulting in destruction of the oceans. It isn’t just the fishing, but it is plainly stupid, and radical “right-wingers” who only want profit, are NOT “conservative” in any sense of the world. They’re just stupid.
They dazzle you with global warming while the oceans are turned into a garbage pit. There is no proof of global warming but there is plenty of proof that the oceans are dying.
Trying to understand your post because cod are predatory fish and Newfoundland’s fishing economy has been ravaged by foreign incursions on areas Canada has tried to protect—to the extent that they’ve had military confrontations with commercial fishing vessels.
BTW, the big hit on cod was when they took all those old enough, and large enough, to be in reproductive condition, then found they were taking all the “babies”. It will take yet another while to build it back up, as the fish take years to reach spawning age.

I’ve also wondered if krill overfishing (for popular omega-3 oils and farm-fish feed) is setting a up similar ecological disaster.
