Grover Norquist may be the biggest loser of the past election. (Willard has close to a Billion to fall back on — and will likely retroactively unretire from Bain).-A few Republicans are floating trial balloons about breaking their oath to serve Grover, but hedging with some disclaimers (for the good of the country) and tough talk about the opposition (only with entitlement reform).-The one about being for the good of the country cracks me up. Is this an admission that they have NOT been acting for the good of the coutry up till now?-Seems like.
Here’s how this works:1. (Republican) – We’re taxed enough already! No more taxes. Cut entitlements!2. (Democrats & Media) – Those stupid Republicans. We have to raise taxes how else can we balance the budget? (We’d lose votes if we cut entitlements, so we’d rather bankrupt the nation rather than get voted out of office.)3. (Media) – Evil Nazi Republicans! How dare they not give more of their money away ? A third of their income isn’t enough (my note – this doesn’t include state, property, sales, and other taxes)! We’ve got to raise taxes! How moronic they are not to compromise with us by doing everything we want done! If you don’t agree to raise taxes, the Democrats will not agree to the budget, and we will make sure you get the blame. If you raise taxes, we’ll be your buddies and make sure everyone knows what stand-up folks you are! 4. (Republicans) – We said we would not vote for more taxes, but we’ll get blamed for no budget deal, even though the Democrats won’t compromise any. Since the media will cut us some slack in the next election, and praise us for giving in, maybe we can get re-elected anyway. So, okay, we’ll give in and raise taxes, and you won’t have to cut any entitlements.5. (Dems and media, the day after) – LIARS!! TRAITORS!! You betrayed your constituency because you said you would not raise taxes. We told everyone you Republicans are liars and cheats, and now you’ve proven us right!
This is pretty much exactly what will happen. Reference? The 1992 presidential election. The main difference then was that we weren’t as close to bankrupting the nation.
“…tax cuts are put off 4 or 5 years and then never happen.”-So, there weren’t any tax cuts during the Bush administration? Are you saying the income tax for the wealthiest is still 91%? I don’t think you thought that statement out before posting it…
Once again, the Republicans are surrenderring before the fight is really even engaged. When the base rejects them (again) they can sit in a circle asking themselves what went wrong.
For those of you that consider government a business, how many of you would consider just cutting back on your expenses, or even more personally, your household expenses with no salary raise ever?? larger populations, rising prices, inflation, new technologies all require a balanced approach. More revenue, less waste, more efficiency, less loopholes, more education, and finally all of us pushing in the same general direction, which means compromise and love.
