I know a guy who was told what they could and could not eat as a kid by a parent. He was skinny as a rail for years. Then he hit his teens, got his license, and seriously put on some weight as he didn’t have to listen as much, he could make his own choices. For years he’d been told what choices he could make in food, ie. he didn’t really have a choice. So once he actually could make the choice he rebelled against years of what he had been told. Ralston and so many like the character are just like the parent, tell folks what they can and can’t do, saying their teaching them to make the right choices. But in reality their not offering a chance for choices.

The trick is you tell the teenager the opposite of what you want them to do; either they find out why it is wrong or they do the right thing out of spite.
