To quote my Japanese friend Hoji: “If I wanted to make a movie I’d want as many people as possible to pay to see it. I’d use white actors because they look good to more people and people don’t go to movies to see ugly actors.”
I got similar responses when I asked my Korean friends what they thought. My favorite response was from my Chinese husband; “you do know it’s just a movie, right?”
Hmm, so using Hoji’s logic, Spike Lee should have had an all white cast for “Malcolm X”. Maybe when Aaron McGruder finally makes the live action “Boondocks” movie, he’ll use all whites like Hoji, because Asians are so proud of their looks/features and…it’s just a movie.
