I’m an “old people,” I think, by most standards, but I don’t have any of your creepy mites. You’re just trying to deflect unfavorable attention from yourself unto a helpless minority. Shame!

The Belgian soldier in the “Found Photos” is wearing what is called the Yser uniform, so the photo most likely dates from 1915-1916. The Germans occupied about 99% of Belgium during the war, but the Belgian army remained intact and fighting, and gradually switched over to British-supplied equipment as the war went on. There are no insignia on the man’s uniform; most soldiers would have had a division or regiment number on their forage cap. I’m guessing that this man had just finished basic training and was not yet assigned to a unit. The Germans occupied Bruge, so most likely he was a refugee before he joined the army—about one-fifth of all Belgians fled into France or Holand when the Germans invaded.

Woo Hoo! I can read Frog Applause again! Being without power sucks. Typhoon Jelawat packed a bigger punch than any of the other typhoons this season. My town was among the last to get power back (after 2 days). I was very lucky, though, only losing power. My house had no problems, and my car didn’t get sent rolling around, or have anything thrown into it. (Great videos on Facebook on AFN Okinawa.) And at least I still had water, unlike a lot of people.

The masked man in the Sartre section is a US Navy aviator wearing a cold weather mask. I can’t find anything specific on this type of mask, but it would have been us similar types were used for low-altitude flying (below 10,000 feet, where oxygen was unnecessary) in freezing conditions. An air gunner in the Aleutians might have worn it.

I’ve been told that most of the 96-98% got their mites from the very same miter box mentioned yesterday.-I suppose that means my miter box, the one I use to saw my frames, will need to be fumigated. I can’t abide mites!!!!

Blog/shotgun and dead jackrabbit : Cool! I spent my high school years in Colusa, CA. Big waterfowl hunting / fishing town, as well as rabbits. Right on the Sacramento River. Looks like a flintlock in the picture.

Plum dumplings: In Austria, called Zwetchenknödel, and they can also be made with apricots, called Marillenknödel. The latter are made in a similar way, but you take the stone out of the apricot without breaking it apart, and stuff it with brown sugar. The dumplings are then made, and rolled in a mixture of breadcrumbs, sugar and cinnamon before serving. They are insanely good.

I actually had cracked heels like that for a period when I was involved in TaeKwon-do. It took a while to clear it up, with regular pumice work and softeners.
