An unnecessary intrusion by government into an irrelevancy.

It was not a slur at the time it was adopted, and even today a large majority of Native Americans are not offended by the name.

No intrusion at all. In fact, the government just withdrew itself from the issue, leaving it a matter of personal liberty. Fly, little racial epithet (meaning the scalp of a native American), fly! You’ve been set free over a 1999 court case decided on by three Bush II appointees!

“It was not a slur at the time it was adopted.” Actually, it was – it just wasn’t acceptable to challenge it. Not that it matters — it is a slur NOW.
“A large majority of Native Americans are not offended by the name.” What percentage would you find acceptable?

“…and even today a large majority of Native Americans are not offended by the name.”

So where are the results of the poll you based your assertion on?

Was a slur, is a slur and it’s shameful in the year 2014 in our nations Capitol.

There’s an idea. They should change their name to the Washington Scalpers. They could even keep the same uniforms and logos.

The vast majority of American Indians have no problem with the Redskins name.
    .
So, is that opinion or fact?

    @Jase99

    Here are some poll results:

    http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/9235381/poll-majority-approve-washington-redskins-name

    http://thinkprogress.org/sports/2014/01/03/3116081/poll-showing-people-like-redskins-matters/

    http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/2013/05/02/washington-redskins-name-poll-associated-press-gfk/2131223/

    http://www.buzzfeed.com/lindseyadler/native-americans-offended-by-racial-slur

So what I see is that the general population does not think the term racist or derogatory. The “native American” (which they are not) population (at 1.2% of the general population according to the latest census results) however shows a different conclusion. Let’s say 70% find it offensive (67% on one poll)..

    So the numbers.

    US population 316, 128.839 (est)

Native American population 3.8 million (est)

number of people that are “offended” 2.8 million

So are we then to sooth the hurt feelings of one city the size of Chicago (2.7 million) and allow them to dictate to the remainder of the country as to what words we can speak or names we can adopt as our own?

    just a thought……..

I can stand to be corrected but worldwide people of Jewish faith and/or identify with being Jewish number 15 million. I think 5 million live in the USA…?
Using your logic anti-Semtism is simply allowing a tiny number of people on this planet to dictate to the rest that…

No, of course it is not. Anti-Semitism is not about a numbers game, it is about offensiveness, bigotry and discrimination.
    Likewise using the label Redskins.

    apples and oranges my brother.

I am talking strictly about the US. Not Germany or Iraq or China or any combination of nations.

Now you seem to forget that in 1948 the United Nations parceled out a segment of the “holy land” (that place is holy to many) or Palestine as so named by the Romans for the express purpose of creating an autonomous nation for Israel.

And that small nation was attacked immediately upon forming.

I’m sure some one somewhere got their feelings hurt. Along with the death and mayhem that happens during a war.

The PC BS currently being forced down our throats does not equate to the violent persecution that the Jews have endured over the centuries.

A small minority of people (not even citizens if they are claiming Native American status and citizenship in the various tribes instead) have their feelings hurt, they are offended by the long established trademark name of a sports affiliation.

    Boo f…ing hoo.
