I don’t understand why the Catholic Church is so opposed to creationism, motive, it was the belief of the Catholic Church for hundreds of years. Once you allow for a Creator (which the Catholic Church most certainly does), then the manner in which the universe was created does not HAVE to follow currently understood modes of science. Catholics believe in Creation Ex Nihilo, that is to say, God spoke it into existence out of nothing. Once you allow that premise, the appearance of a mature earth and a mature universe is not at all problematic. Besides that, you also have catastrophism as opposed to uniformitarianism. Creationism is not absurd for a theist, though it is absurd for an atheist.
