Chuck Asay sifts the events of the day through his biblical worldview and tries to persuade readers to see things his way...that rights are given by a higher authority than the governments of men, that mankind is not the ultimate arbiter of truth and that our Constitutional Republic is worth protecting. Chuck believes ideas, not politicians rule the world. He tries to protect ideas which he thinks are good and attacks ideas he thinks bring harm.

What does the koran say about women?

I dare you to say that to some of our American combat veterans who are women. Might be walking home (well, limping more likely) without any teeth.

What does the Bible say about women? That they have to marry their rapists? Or that if their husbands die before the couple has children, that they must marry the husband’s brother? This is not a liberal/conservative issue. Even conservatives ignore parts of the Bible they disagree with, like, say, the part that says that eating shellfish is an abomination.

While I agree that the “laws” in the bible held relevance to the time and may not today, it may serve you well to read the entire passage and then ask someone to explain it from each sects standpoint to get an overall view.
Not that I am that authority.
Levirate Marriage. 5c When brothers live together* and one of them dies without a son, the widow of the deceased shall not marry anyone outside the family; but her husband’s brother shall come to her, marrying her and performing the duty of a brother-in-law.d 6The firstborn son she bears shall continue the name of the deceased brother, that his name may not be blotted out from Israel. 7But if a man does not want to marry his brother’s wife, she shall go up to the elders at the gate and say, “My brother-in-law refuses to perpetuate his brother’s name in Israel and does not intend to perform his duty toward me.” 8Thereupon the elders of his city shall summon him and speak to him. If he persists in saying, “I do not want to marry her,” 9* his sister-in-law, in the presence of the elders, shall go up to him and strip his sandal from his foot and spit in his face, declaring, “This is how one should be treated who will not build up his brother’s family!” 10And his name shall be called in Israel, “the house of the man stripped of his sandal.”
So at the time, families lived under one roof, shared resources and so on. At the time, a man married for various reasons but one was to continue the family line. So if the one brother was married and had no children then it would be up to the other brother to continue the family line. Now the proposed way was to marry the sister in law but it was not mandatory even if it was the “tradition” .
You also ignore other biblical possibilities concerning laws concerning food and diet given to the Israelis.
Originally, the Bible explicitly said (while talking to the entire human race LOL IE Noah and his family) concerning food:
3Every moving thing that liveth shall be meat for you; even as the green herb have I given you all things.
4But flesh with the life thereof, which is the blood thereof, shall ye not eat.
5And surely your blood of your lives will I require; at the hand of every beast will I require it, and at the hand of man; at the hand of every man’s brother will I require the life of man.
6Whoso sheddeth man’s blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he man. (Gen 9)
The nation on Israel was “taken out” , “chosen” for and “example” to the rest of the world and given specific laws and rituals to “set them apart” from the nations.
Later, Christians were told that the Hebrew scriptures were a “tutor” leading to the christ, that the “law had been nailed to the cross and done away with”, that there was a “new” covenant and that again all things may serve as food for them.
Do a little research, I’ve been to wordy AGAIN.

3:195] Their Lord responded to them: “I never fail to reward any worker among you for any work you do, be you male or female – you are equal to one another. Thus, those who immigrate, and get evicted from their homes, and are persecuted because of Me, and fight and get killed, I will surely remit their sins and admit them into gardens with flowing streams.” Such is the reward from GOD. GOD possesses the ultimate reward.
16:97] Anyone who works righteousness, male or female, while believing, we will surely grant them a happy life in this world, and we will surely pay them their full recompense (on the Day of Judgment) for their righteous works.
Essentially, the Koran says men and women are equal, both may fight in just combat, and both deserve equal pay and reward for equal work. Unfortunately, in many Islamic traditions, the local Mullah is the final word in how the words of the Prophet are interpreted, and they will advocate for local sexist traditions over the actual words to appeal to their followers. One of Mohammed’s top general was a woman.

Ima,
I’m just responding directly to your question in my previous post. What is often misunderstood about Islam is that the Mullah’s and scholars study both the Koran, and a book of apocryphal quotes attributed to Mohammed and his initial followers. Like Christianity, there are many sects promoting different beliefs. The first schism was actually directly following Mohammed’s death, when the argument was whether his son and bloodline were to be the head of the religion, or is the highest ranking Mullah, regardless of bloodline, was to be in charge. Essentially, Mohammed wrote a book and it all went downhill from there.

" they think every other culture/religion is fine"
Once again egotism and ignorance rears its ugly head. All religions result in much much more bad than good and all cultures have their good and bad parts. That’s this atheist social progressive fiscal conservative semi-libertarians view. Unlike you, I never presume to know what others think and believe.

That’s Arab culture, not Muslim. Take a look at the plurality of Muslims…Southeast Asians.

regardless of what a book says; actions speak louder than words. See how they treat their women today; rape is a common punishment for ‘dishonoring’ your family. and was throwing acid in their faces used when the koran was written?
and a broader view; shia’s kill shiites, shiite’s kill shia’s, then there’s the hagganis that kill and are killed by the other 2 sects.( and this has been going on for generations)
muslims destroyed a library in Mali, blew up christian churches in the phillipines because they dared call God ‘allah’ etc, etc, etc.
and they all want to kill all us ’infidels.
