Chuck Asay sifts the events of the day through his biblical worldview and tries to persuade readers to see things his way...that rights are given by a higher authority than the governments of men, that mankind is not the ultimate arbiter of truth and that our Constitutional Republic is worth protecting. Chuck believes ideas, not politicians rule the world. He tries to protect ideas which he thinks are good and attacks ideas he thinks bring harm.

How can it be wrong to recede from war? And those ties that bind Mr. Nethanjahu have been placed there by himself and his party. Make peace, allow a Palestinian state, stop the racism, act like adults and things will get better. But that’s a message that “the chosen people” don’t want to hear…

Really? Why is O wanting to go to war with Libya and Iran?

Gotta love these liberals commenting on….well, just about anything. Can’t make an argument, so go back to the tired old playbook…name calling, racism…. Really, Morty, “the chosen people?” I’m not Jewish, but saying things like that belittles you and diminishes everything else you have to say. And the libs say conservatives are the racists? And Ransom, if that is all you can muster to say, why bother? What are you… 2 years old?

The ones pushing us into Iran, Libya, and Syria is Obama and the democrats. And contrary to the delusions of liberals everywhere, we were attacked on 9/11 and not by Mosad or whoever the current popular people to blame it on other than who really committed the attack.

I know you guys think the bible is nothing but a fantasy concocted to enslave the masses and trick them into believing in a non existent deity BUT does anyone think the “prophecies” concerning Armageddon in The Revelation to John or Daniel chapter 2 may have some similarities to current events?
And then there is the Qur’an and it’s similar prophecies concerning the 12th Imam. Do the leaders in Iran think about them? Here is an interesting article.

Religion – ALL religion – has been and is now the leading cause of hatred and war among humans. As it was in the beginning so it is today. There IS a struggle between “good” and “evil” between the “light” and “darkness”. When was it, what was the point in time when the “animal” that would develop into “homo-sapiens” first “knew” right from wrong and began to question their own actions?
Make that last step. Understand that it is true. There is a “war” coming. There are people that believe with all their existence that “blood” must run in the streets of the world to bring about peace. But it can be avoided.
Love is all we need.

Since you seem to be intent on fighting a war, emigrate to Israel and enlist.

“… ‘the chosen people?’ I’m not Jewish, but saying things like that belittles you and diminishes everything else you have to say.”
.
Why don’t you do a little research on “The Chosen People” and find out that it is not at all a pejorative. Assuming that it is one has diminished everything you have to say.
.
It is a basic tenet of Judiasm. It is this exact belief that makes for the belief that Jesus Christ is “The Messiah.” The Messiah would HAVE to come from the tribe that is chosen as most precious of God. Yes,No?
.
“And the libs say conservatives are the racists?”
.
As a Liberal, I take offense at your reference to liberals as “libs” I find it to be the intent of the caller to be demeaning and belittling. I think this is especially apparent when the caller then calls the conservatives, “conservatives”.
.
Beyond this, the differences are that , first of all you are wrong about referring to the Jews as “The Chosen People” being racist. So “Garbage In Garbage Out” your assumptions are wrong so your conclusions are wrong as well.
.
Secondly, If a person who is liberal is a racist, that doesn’t make all persons who are liberal racist. The contra positive is also true, just because a person who is conservative is racist, that doesn’t mean all conservatives are racist. But it is that sort of generalization that leads one to think that the generalizer generally employs the same thought process, which is indeed a mindset that is often found amongst bigots.
.
I must back up here and state that it is my opinion that all people are inherantly “racist” in that all peoples are, by nature, egoists. It’s an evolutionary imperitive that we believe that some “we” and all "me"s are of paramount importance (and must survive). But I find that people who think are able to compensate for their natural inclination, and people who don’t or can’t think generally do not.
.
As to your comment to Ransome… You seem to be new around here. Many people have made long and reasoned cases against and for particular ideologies, and only add short bursts here and there tohold their place in the conversation until such tie as something worthy of comment comes along.
.
I’m not very familiar with Ransom’s work, but it seems to me that is what he is up to here.
.
As to the cartoon, the problem with Asay is that he sets up the situation often to the detriment of his own point. For example…
.
The tide is receding, Bibi is tied to a post, he has not drowned, therefore the tide was never high enough to do him any real damage.
.
That’s not the point that Asay would like to make, but that is what his work conveys. This is an artistic medium and the words and the images are supposed to work together to convey a point of view. In this effort, Asay has, once again, failed.
.

“…a fantasy concocted to enslave the masses”
Nicely put, couldn’t have stated it better myself.
Bruce also asks: “BUT does anyone think the “prophecies” concerning Armageddon in The Revelation to John or Daniel chapter 2 may have some similarities to current events?”
Er, I don’t, but there are certainly many End of Days folks about who do. And that is a real worry. Are you one of them, Bruce? What the hell are they putting in your tea?!
The interesting thing about prophecies, one can always relate to one, within any era.
Take astrology. Ever read them? Look up your birth sign.
Sounds …familiar to your situation? By gosh! I think I shall follow its advice! Now look up another star sign.
Sounds…familiar to your situation? By gosh! I should have been born in that month, it sounds awfully like the situation I’m in right now. Now look up yet another month’s star sign.
Sounds…familiar to your situation! and so on…
Anyway, how about just following your own advice, “Love is all we need”, and stop looking up silly prophecies. We can be loving without a book or two telling how to.

Religion allows the people who wage warfare (and “terrorism” and whatever other words for war you want to come up with) to do so based on BELIEF rather than KNOWLEDGE. The bar from belief to knowledge is significant and high. And it doesn’t necessarily involve religion — it can involve crazy political theories. But Asay is clearly in the mythology bracket here.
.
One thing I want to say about Chuck Asay is that like most evangelical christianists, he worships the Bible before Jesus. Even with the indisputable KNOWLEDGE that the New Testament was written by men centuries after Jesus died, somehow Christ’s words and message weren’t a bit minced and should be taken as literal, even if it means misery, repression, hate and war to the non-believers. (To say nothing of the knowers.) This is a colossal distinction between true Christians and evangelical christianists.
.
He appears to follow the common cultish belief that for the End Times to happen “properly” Jerusalem needs to be safely in the hands of the Jews. He will toss away the Sermon on the Mount and replace it with Revelations or Leviticus or Numbers if it gives him a better pew in his church.
.
So if you’re wondering why Asay is so gung ho about Israel’s Prime Minister, why he puts a war-crazed foreigner’s demands ahead of his own country’s needs, go dig through the last part of the Bible in between the part about lakes of fire and four horsemen and you’ll find it.

Bruce, I cut out the first few words; now put yourself in the mindset of only having written it thusly, “The bible is nothing but a fantasy concocted to enslave the masses and trick them into believing in a non existent deity BUT does anyone think the “prophecies” concerning Armageddon in The Revelation to John or Daniel chapter 2 may have some similarities to current events?”
.
If you were the person who thought that the Bible were as you wrote, would you then turn on that belief to believe the wackiest part of the whole book?
.
The whole of Christian history involves the belief that the prophesies of The Book of Revelations are at hand!
Everybody knew that the black plague was God’s Rapture. The very reason that Jews were so often persecuted was that the Catholics were certain that the reason they weren’t getting the plague was because they were in league with the devil! Ergo, in order to get right with God, we must kill them! This hysteria ran all through Christendom throughout the centuries.
.
Being afraid today that this is the end of times is so ordinary that it’s embarrassing! Especially for a country that was formed by the man who PROVED that God wasn’t out to smite us!
.
The Ben Franklin Story:
.
Ben Franklin (the only man who played a key role in the Declaration, The Articles and the Constitution!) flew his kite in a rain storm. Every School boy knows the tale. But why is it so important?
.
Because of churches. Church steeples were routinely struck by lightning, and the superstitious peoples “KNEW” that this meant the God was unhappy with something that was going on in that church! Just like the Televangelists say that hurricanes and planes flying into buildings are messages from Gaaaw-d.
.
Franklin figured out that electricity would follow the path of least resistance and so he put a metal rod on the top of the steeple and a wire down into the ground!
.
Steeples still got hit by lightning, because they were the highest structure. But the church didn’t burn because the electricity took the wire into the ground where it did no harm.
.
The Europeans hailed him as the new Prometheus!
.
We don’t believe anymore in the inevitability of the Book of Revelations. The age of superstition is past.
.
Guttenberg invented the moveable type printing press and the history of the world could now be stored and shared by all. Since then we have learned that people are always convinced that the world is coming to the end.
.
In my humble opinion, the reason for this is the human ego, and our cognitive dissonance of our sense of mortality and immortality. We all believe that we are so important to the universe that we MUST live in the most important of times! Otherwise, we are just one of the countless billions that have lived and died before us. Our ego won’t let us believe that (It can’t, otherwise, we’d have no imperative for survival!). I don’t expect that you’ll climb down from your fear, but I do wish you the peace of understanding that your son has given you immortality. The world isn’t about to end and the human race will continue for at least as long as the dinosaurs did.
.

Israel has hundreds of nuclear weapons, a poorly kept “secret”. They have multiple defense systems against attack, and delivery systems for THEIR weapons. Israel has attacked all its neighbors, including Iraq and Syria, and their proxy state has attacked and occupied Afghanistan and Iraq, and now postures threats against Iran if they have the audacity to suggest THEY have a right to defend themselves from a nuclear armed nation to their west.
It is sad that “religious faith” demands the world ignore statistical, and military facts of the last 60 years, as to WHO has been the real aggressor in the Middle East. Only ONE “nation state” in the MIddle East has actually attacked the United States military, and that is Israel.
Even with the provocation of shooting down one of THEIR civilian airliners with the excuse of “error”, they accepted peaceful resolution to the “situation”. Yes, vocal threats, as in “sticks and stones” have flown, but not missiles, bombs, or military action, because even though this “paper tiger” does have teeth, they know what the REAL result of their biting the hand of the real tiger would mean.
Our Constitution says we shall have no religious test, or prejudice at home, and the same should apply to our foreign policy. Part of that is that we should not let the radicals in a tiny nation on the coast of the Mediterranean determine that policy for us. “Bible prophecy” is of course the worst possible guidance for our nation, and it’s time to kick it to the curb.

sure my brother. You too.
The thing is, we can look at current events and see that the world is going in the wrong direction. Is it akin to prophecies? Is it calamity just around the corner? Does it matter? Probably not.
But if you have a large group of people that are determined to bring about their version of prophecy and will do whatever it takes to do so does it matter if the books you can fantasy a similar?
You can discount the warnings. You are closer to the reality across the pond.

Well isn’t that amassing. You and I have similar views on God and the Universe.
We are indeed “stardust” and yes the universe is doing exactly what the universe was designed to do.
And I might add (though I do not think you will agree) that the entity that gave everything to create that universe IS the universe and is satisfied with the outcome.
Our tiny insignificant planet with it’s current top of the food chain predator winding it’s way toward it’s very own extinction event will not alter that plan..
