Here is a quote I came across this morning.

. “A society’s first line of defense is not the law but customs, traditions, and moral values,” wrote Professor Walter Williams a few years ago. “They include important thou-shalt-nots such as shalt not murder, shalt not steal, shalt not lie and cheat, but they also include all those courtesies one might call ladylike and gentlemanly conduct. Policemen and laws can never replace these restraints on personal conduct.”

So now that our society has said that morals do not matter as long as every one consents to whatever it is you are doing, that the family is anything you wish it to be, that motherhood is a solitary affair with only the woman with any say in it, that fathers are not a necessary part of the child raising process, that the state will be the final arbiter of what is “right and wrong” how has our society fared?

And please, where do we find the admonitions for the “shall nots”?

In the “family”? what exactly is that?

In government? Gee, truth, honesty, integrity is so obviously part of government, right? I mean our president NEVER lies does he…..

So all you guys that want to keep making MORE LAWS when the problem is not a lack of law but a lack of moral character need to sit down and put on your thinking caps.

If we really had decided that “morals don’t matter,” we wouldn’t get so upset at the GOP war on the poor. But some of us are still bothered by this.

What’s weird about this cartoon is that it’s exactly the opposite of the truth. It’s the GOP that shut down the entire government and almost made the country a deadbeat in order to “kill” an existing law when they couldn’t get the population on their side to do it legitimately. And Obama can’t “execute” laws if the congress is not even competent to pass them.

    >"… the GOP war on the poor."

Ah. But the Dems war on the rich is MUCH more destructive of society. They are the givers, the poor are the takers.

The bizarre thing about wbr’s statement is that he is presenting a libertarian point of view, not a liberal point of view…and he doesn’t appear to know that they are different.

“liberate [fill in blank of what speaker wants]” is not libertarian // the other 2 the liberatarian accepts the results of their actions where as liberal feels others should bear the burdenr

And conservatives think that all poor people should be locked up in camps and only released to work at WalMart.

Well Doc, you speak from ideology spewing the current talking points all the time.

If you look at the current state of affairs, you can see where a the “new and improved” moral code holds sway.

Let’s start with religion – which again I have no use for. What has your new moral code produced there? Tolerance of different views and opinions? Or perhaps not. Now remember that just a scant 50 years ago, this country (as it still is) was nominally Christian as claimed by the citizens on collected data. Were these “christians” all tolerant of other beliefs? NO. But did they call for persecution in the courts for those that did not embrace a religious creed? again no. The stand was that this was a country where you are free to believe what you will. How about today?

So gays – while not being my personal cup of tea – are “tolerated” and should not be discriminated against in any way. Even though they as a group are a very small section of the whole.

How about “race relations”? Not good in the past but the “primitive” moral code recognized and slowly began the journey to rectify the situation. No thanks to the democrats. Just sayin….

And “family values”? Well, since the family unit is the basis for society, it would seem prudent to support family values. You know, a bread winner, a care giver and teacher forming and maintaining a support foundation for any children.

Gays can do it. So can single parents. However, look at the results of no Dads in the family (dads are a place holder in the formula and can take either function). The situation in the “welfare” areas where the government is the breadwinner and the caregiver is intent on their comfort and their “necessities” rather than the welfare of the child is self evident.

Our “primitive” morals are better suited to giving the children a strong foundation with defined rules, limits and responsibilities. Does it always work? No. But it works better than what you see in Chicago and Detroit and ….uhhh…. toronto….LOL

So reject “morality”? No, you are right. No one has said that morals are not of value.

However, as always, actions speak louder than words.

What kind of moral code do you think Mr. Ford has or even our PRESIDENT?
