    Wait … he’s suggesting that stoned people are excellent drivers?

    They did a study in Holland and pot smokers had a lower accident rate than drinkers and people who had neither drank alcohol or smoked pot. I read that but don’t remember where.

    As we found “anecdotally” in Viet Nam, when it “hit the fan”, the drunks died, the guys on MJ could still react. Medical marijuana is NOT the same as “recreational”, and many, many prescription drugs influence negatively reaction times, and driving ability, as well as OTCs like cold remedies, far more significantly than a “therapeutic” use of MJ. Even “recreational” use of MJ is less impairing than alcohol.

    In an interesting “experiment” conducted quite some time ago with CHP assistance on a closed course, professional race drivers were given drinks and a driving test around a test course. While most were significantly impaired after ONE DRINK, I believe it was Bobby Unser who actually did BETTER BLASTED!! These were professional race drivers, and the one individual was a total exception to “the rule”.

    Yes, legalization does need to include penalties for driving impaired, and DUII should long ago have led to mandatory jail time on first offense, and homicide charges if a fatal accident is caused by anyone with a previous DUII conviction, but MJ is frankly, safer than either alcohol OR many OTC, and definitely many prescription drugs.

    Marijuana is mentioned as a medicinal herb in the ancient ayurvedic texts of India.

    Tigger, sorry you lost your brother. At age 18, my brother was killed by an incapacitated driver, old age and alcohol, and she’d killed three other people in the same spot outside her ranch driveway as well, but was never arrested because she was a “sweet old lady”, who just happened to give the investigating officer on my brother’s accident a prize breeding German Shepherd worth over $5,000.

    Read your own post though, your brother was 1 DRUNK and secondarily, smoking pot.

    I arrested many people for smoking pot, and driving drunk. Those who had obviously “smoking” were 99% of the time far better able to pass a field sobriety test of reaction times, coordination, and mental function (like the counting and alphabet tests). Handled too many drunk fatal accidents, but even in the high marijuana use area we were in at the time, never handled one where the driver was just on pot.

    Again, sorry for your loss, I suffered the same thing. BTW, my mom is 101 years old, the accident that killed my brother was in 1959, and there isn’t a conversation on family where she doesn’t focus entirely on my brother’s death.

    @dtroutma

    My mother died of cancer. I would have given anything for pot to be legal to ease her suffering.

    I have cancer, pot helps a little but not a lot. Mostly it makes the morphine work better.
