I’ve said similar about the Catholic Church for years. It’s refreshing to see a Pope live more humbly. If only he could inspire the rest of the Church leadership to do the same.

My dad’s “memorable moment” of their visit to Mexico City was the folks on their knees bringing their possessions to the front of the church, and the armored cars taking that wealth out the back.

That was a long time ago, but it seems Francis may finally be onto something, getting away from the church of greed and prosperity, that going back to the Inquisition, WAS all about accumulating wealth, for the church. Big change.

Perhaps you should spend a week with a priest, to see just how full his day is. A priest is on call 24/7. He ministers to the sick, the dying, the families. He runs the charitable events, like food drive, mittens for the kids, he visits the handicapped and elderly who can no longer get to church, he says Mass nearly every day and on weekends, while you are “playing” he is at his busiest. Our church barely collects enough to pay the bills, some weeks coming up short, since the church relys solely on the congregations generosity. And that generosity is affected by the state of our economy. And when the people in the congregation suffer, they turn first to the church. The church charges no admission fee, it is a free-will offering.

Really, you need to spend time with a priest, just to see how much work they do in a day, a week, a year. Oh, and when was the last time the church actually used scare tactics or threats to acquire land and gold from someone. Not since medieval times. You should stop listening to cliches and mainstream media, and look into it for yourself. Happy Thanksgiving, from someone who attended Mass this morning….in gratitude for the freedom to do so.

“It’s not about the institution, it’s about the man. I expect great things from him, even though I’m an atheist. And then he will be poisoned…”
Hopefully not. He (rightfully) makes alot of people uncomfortable and I’m ok with that.
