Looks like it’s all over except the blame game and the deepening partisan divide. It’s a shame the background check failed. That really would have been a useful tool.

At least the “take your concealed carry to every state regardless” amendment to the bill also failed. What happened to the “states rights” argument the GOP usually uses?

You’re right. We need MUCH stricter gun laws than the one that failed in Congress.
Obama was right. It was cowardice on the part of senators, including Democratic senators, who failed to recognize the will of 90% of Americans who WANT STRICTER GUN CONTROLS.
And even 70% of the NRA is willing to have better background checks and the like.
Wayne LaPierre and the NRA machine are not supporting the will of their own organization’s members — just that of the arms manufacturers.

Yes. 90% of Americans want background checks.

It’s a sad commentary on our Senate that they can’t write a simple bill with only backround checks in it. This is what has overwhelming support. From the Senate bill, S.649 second reading, cover page-“….and require a background check for every firearm sale, AND FOR OTHER PURPOSES” (upper case is mine).

The killer for this bill was the “other purposes” allowed into this bill. Everybody stuck their fingers in it, including the backround check part, and added amendments that multiple parties found objectionable, making it impossible to reach the required consensus.

What I most object to about this situation is that the politicians are performing lies of omission by acting like this bill is only about backround checks. The media is going along with it either because of their own agenda or because they are too lazy to read the bill and understand why some would object to some portions of same.

The entire bill, second reading can be found at:

I have verified that this site address does work.

Thank goodness he wasn’t reelected through the will of the people!

You could call them DINO’s. What’s your point?

No, you could just call them politicians. Almost all the republicans voted against it. Politics reigned supreme. Yet silently they passed legislation to gut the insider trading, financial disclosure requirements for congress. There is no honor amongst them, they have proven themselves to be a totally selfish, self centered lot that care only for themselves and hold themselves above the laws they enforce on us.

Except that it already IS “infringed”.
You cannot buy automatic firearms. You cannot buy mortars. You cannot buy a man-portable rocket launcher. These are arms, and YOU CANNOT LEGALLY PURCHASE THEM.
But if they lift the ban on that last one, I’ll be the first in line to buy. And I’ll keep it pointed at your house- just in case, y’know? I’ll try not to jostle it when I’m vacuuming the rug….

They suffer from ADD for sure. Especially when it comes to legislation. They take a bill and ADD on this and then ADD on that then ADD on a few things in between.

    “blue dog ones from…Alaska…DINO’s”

yes indeed, and the republican senator is a RINO.
Amazing how often they agree on what is best rather than “what party?”
Wouldn’t have it any other way, another 98 like them and America would be looking back at this mess and wondering how it was allowed to happen.

Mikefive: Great comment on ADD. In Ohio, we have a law that restricts legislation/amendments to one subject. It really does work! A legislative pay raise can get added to a casino bill. The reason? The “one subject” is MONEY!
