It really isn’t an answer as it’s common in many countries to have a glass of wine or beer somewhere around lunch.
.
The real problem is the large amount that Mona drinks. Given what she told the psychologist, it’s amazing her liver still works. Particularly with the “double whammy” of smoking at the same time. About 20 years ago, it was realized that tobacco and smoking together were worse than smoking alone, because of the need of the body to detoxify many of the compounds of each via the liver. Because of the double up, so to speak, it requires more time for the liver to remove them, giving them more time in the bloodstream.
.
Speaking of toxics, I’m surprised the people on the west side of the cascades having started smoking scotch broom. It’s toxic, having some compounds similar to nicotine:

Did you mean the combo of Alcohol and smoking? That’s what makes sense despite what you said.

Read more of his comments, proclamations and his book, and you’ll seek – but fail to find much sense within or amongst any of them.

beer and wine = “quitting” (you know who you are).

Remember, you only have a drinking problem if you wake up in a dry county.

A glass of wine or a bottle of beer with lunch is not at all unusual in many European countries, nor in a good many U.S. households. But Mona’s 2 PM wine seems to be unaccompanied by any food, and is probably only a small part of her daily consumption. Mona is almost certainly an alcoholic.

until modern sanitation laws the waters of Europe were highly polluted and undrinkable. The process of making beer and wine sterilizes them therefore The only thing to drink that wouldn’t make you sick was wine or beer. As a result most people in Europe were polluted by 10 o’clock in the morning. thank god for modern sanitation.

Three Drinks for the Alchie-kings under the bridge,
Seven for the Gang-lords in the halls of their clubs,
Nine for Working Men doomed to die,
One for the Drug Lord in his dark web,
In the Land of New York where the Darkness lies,
One drink to rule them all, one drink to find them,
One drink to bring them all and in the alcohol bind them
In the Land of New York where the Darkness lies.

What’s Scotchbroom when you can really screw yourself good with meth or krokodil?
Smokers really pay the price on their face…nicotine turn them into wrinkled apples at an early age and the booze
make their skin all flappy to boot…a healthy human age with dignity…smokers and alkies are a wheezing vision of horror!
