With a fatalistic attitude like that, Lemont has already lost at the game of life. I’ve known some people like that, but thank goodness, they are in the minority.

I disagree, his attitude is positive and not depressing about his future, he just knows simple math, which many in this country fail at. Enjoy life now with what you have, and keep working till you drop. Many people can not always control what life throws in their direction.

“Well, as your doctor, I’m afraid it falls to me to break the bad news to you. In fact, I have 2 separate pieces of bad news.”
    “What’s the 1st one, doc?”
    “I’m afraid you have cancer.”
“Oh, geez, that’s too bad. What’s the 2nd one?”
    “You also have Alzheimer’s Disease.”
“Well, I suppose it could have been worse. I might have had cancer.”

Sounds like the Travis MsGee approach. I tried it, but in my early 30s got a job and was able to retire a few years ago.

My Dad was saving up and had big plans for when he retired, and was putting off vacations and travel until then. Then he had a heart attack and died at 49.

Similar idea to Cary Grant’s in Holiday – 1938, with Katherine Hepburn. Fun movie!
