There are people who deserve to be forever in debt.

Deserved or not, that’s where they’ll stay.
Some people (actually, a lot of people) really can’t handle their own financial affairs with any competence.

It is startling to think that people imagine that they can get out of debt by borrowing. It’s like thinking you can get dry by getting wet.

But they’ve got an out. I try to print money and all sorts of people get upset.

Of which 535 people on Capitol Hill and one in the White House are the scariest.

And yet, it’s perfectly legal for the banking industry to induce people (and whole nations) to dive headlong into this financial black hole. Perfectly legal to trumpet “MAKE YOUR DEBTS GO AWAY” and bury the “by going deeper into debt” in the tiny print. Sure, you can say people (and nations) should be smarter than that, but I think there’s something morally depraved about a culture that thinks it’s OK to take advantage of people who don’t understand a complex and abstract subject like finance.

I keep getting spam for payday loans… but the way I figure it is that, if I am having financial difficulties now, taking out a loan would just make things worse. I am much better off doing without stuff I don’t need than taking out a loan to buy it with.

I do not typically turn to Saturday Night Live for my financial advice, but this IS pretty good…
