Here’s my two cents about yesterday’s discussion of how awful Calvin’s parents are.

Yeesh! Where were you all when Calvin’s mother used Calvin’s imagination to get him to eat one of her “yucky” dinners? She said those white things (rice) were really maggots.

They play with Calvin, read him stories, even though he only wants to read the same one every day. They wash Hobbes, and helped Calvin find Hobbes when he got lost. Not to mention mom had to go and catch Calvin when he was pretending to be a petrodactyl and leapt off the roof. They play along with some of Calvin’s games, like the “Dad” poll. Not to mention the time that gravity didn’t work on Calvin. His dad wanted him to continue the story.

There are lots more examples, but this is getting kind of long. The only time I can remember Calvin getting spanked is when he hosed his mother down as she was walking out the door to go somewhere important. He gets sent to his room most of the time.

The parents are very far from being the kind that CPS should be called on, and people who whine about the parents are missing the entire point of the strip, and the funny part too. You have to remember that this strip is seen through the eyes of Calvin, and Calvin alone. He is SIX. He lives in the moment of Right Now, and yes, the parents do get tired of dealing with him 24/7 but anyone would. Calvin can be a very destructive kid. Parents are allowed to yell and vent too!

The chuckles come from when people go…oh yeah, I remember when my kid did/when I did something like that! And yes, our parents were the worst parents in the world when they said we couldn’t do X when we were little. Don’t you remember?

Well, think Calvin! Santa bought into Obama’s stimulus package and now the government [which is we the taxpayers] owns Santa and his whole operation. The next we hear the SEIU will unionize the elves and have a Cadillac health care plan that is exempt from taxation until 2018. Don’t expect Santa’s toys to be free next Christmas.

Santa funds his operation through blackmail.

He sees you when you’re sleeping
    He knows when you’re awake
He knows if you’ve been bad or good.

Did you think he stopped when you grew up?

Christ! Santa is not only an american entreprenuer, but his operations are global. He has trade agreements, with the Three Kings of Orient in LatinAmerica and other people in other parts of the world.

And, of course, there is this contract with the toys makers, who let him distribute their products.

Didn’t you know that, being parents???????

It’s facinating to watch human beings spin any philosophical proposition is such a way that it appears to support their personal agendas. For instance, several have quickly made ties between today’s strip and the practices of the current Obama administration.

However, it’s awful tiny print but it looks like this strip was originally published 12-16, 1988? If that’s right then the the U.S. had just completed 8 yrs of the Reagan presidency and was just at the start of George W. Bush administration. We could therefore conclude that any political commentary intended by Waterson was directed toward the Republican administration practices of the time.

The parties may change but one constant the human need to assure oneself of one’s own convictions. We are all such fragile little beasts.

Back in the 80s there was money sloshing about everywhere, and the North Pole was still intact resource-wise. Nowadays Santa gets funding from the Gates Foundation, the World Development Banks, IMF, and whoever else cares about anyone else. Hang on, is there a contradiction in there somewhere? Or maybe he gets a 0.002c commission everytime someone sends an SMS to someone else; or perhaps he gets all the money made from “rounding off” figures on people’s bank accounts.

Oh President Obama’s plan is effecting people all right. The word furloughs are popping up. CA is not the only one which closes on Friday’s to save money. Here in state of KS starting in February, if all goes through, all state court houses will be a week long furlough for several months all court clerks no pay. The state has to cut back millions to get out of the red.
I just heard yesterday some medical office’s in certain departments are thinking the same.
One job is being eliminated in some medical office and that’s records all computer where the Dr. types in his own notes and all can go to the insurance for payment electronically by laptop.

    Wow,
Just when I thought I had found somplace to escape the political spittle, someone takes a comic strip and uses it for their own agenda. Why don’t we, just for once, in just these spaces ,accept the value of the strip without going into our own personal feelings about the state of the world today. The are hundreds of blogs out there that talk about the issues the minority of you want to talk about. Could you go join one of those and leave the rest of us to Calvin’s exploits in peace?

Obama has spent more money, that we do not have, in the first 6 months of his first term than every other President, in the history of the United States, COMBINED!!! From George Washington to George W. Bush. Please get a clue America!!!!

Here’s an idea for Calvin’s dad when Calvin misbehaves:

A father is talking to a younger friend: “When I was a boy and misbehaved, I got sent to my room as punishment. I can’t do that with my son. He’s got a color TV in his room, a cell phone, a computer and a DVD player.” What do you do when he misbehaves, then?” asked the friend. “I send him to MY room,” replied the dad.

Vonnegut: I agree with you on you observation re the human need to “assure oneself of one’s convictions.” I read where it was postulated that was an evolutionary adaptation of the mind/brain, that those who had better skill at developing justifications for one’s actions and attitudes usually had a survival edge. To me it explains how many folks can sleep at night after some of their reprehensible acts, because their minds have crafted self-centered/self-actualizing justification for their actions however heinous, without regard to the rest of the societies morals and rules of law. I wonder how many people are self aware enough to realize when they are doing this self justification..

Let’s see. We lend money to banks. Most have paid it back with interest. This money goes where? Congress? To spend?
Congress in it’s infinite wisdom decides to tax the banks that paid back the money. Huh?

In the meantime, Congress invents a trillion dollar trough for pork called “Stimulus.”

Remember your 7th grade civics class, only Congress can spend money. The president has never passed a law, Congress did.
