Marg - We were worried about you. For crying out loud do not assume that you have a life without us. If you plan to go someplace, then for crying out loud, let us know. Lecture over, bend over for punishment.

“I was just asking!”
Isn’t that an old ‘saw’, Calvin?

Now mom has to clean up the mess from the dropped paint can. She should have asked Calvin to join in the painting she was doing. Whatever problems that could have created would probably be less than what she faces now.

Hopefully the next comic explains why the couch was too wide. Maybe our imaginations could come up with something better. It makes me a little crazy when the next cartoon moves on to a totally different subject altogether.
watcha said, 2 months ago
Dino-1 - the couch is to wide to be used as sled.
RobinaFox said, 2 months ago
At least he didn’t say “Don’t you think the living room couch WAS too wide”
mandayamr said, 2 months ago
After finishing hammering in a nail, handed over the hammer to my son, to keep it back. He chose to take it to his room instead, and hammer a nail on a plain wall instead. :)

Dino-1: Please don’t get crazy! (Okay, maybe just a little.) I think Calvin just wanted an excuse to use the saw. It’s amazing that he did even bother to ask first.
I think any follow-up to this would be anticlimactic.
rshive said, 2 months ago
All those tools are just sitting around not being used.
Too wide for what?

If mom asks him to help with painting, atleast he will be within sight and she will know he is not taking a saw to reduce the width of the couch.
Kids (of course not necessarily Calvin) would benefit from parental guidance in doing routine stuff in the house. This is an opportunity for her to provide Calvin with it. He could put the first coat on for instance.

I could just imagine him going ahead and sawing the couch. When she said, “Why did you do that?” he’d say, “You never told me I couldn’t!”

I’m sure if Mom had Calvin “helping” her with the painting, he’d have more paint on himself than on that little cabinet in no time. Which leads me to another issue about that little cabinet–she is ALWAYS painting it. But then, I realize that she never gets to finish it, so she is always picking up where she left off. I hope it’s washable Latex paint, and not the oil based stuff.

Ya’ know I don’t believe in putting kids on leashes, but for Calvin, I think and exception should be made
threlfallm said, 2 months ago
It’s obviously too wide to fit between the branes keeping Calvin from entering a parallel universe. He must have misplaced the transmogrifier. Either that or he just felt a need to practice his sawing technique.
redsheri said, 2 months ago
At least this time he asked first! :-)
kab2rb said, 2 months ago
Mom and son could do a project together bonding time. Calvin could talk to mom and both get to know each other better. To bad dad can’t do this with Calvin do a project and bond.

grammahotsho said, 2 months ago
Hey! When you’re six your and sit on the couch your feet stick straight out there. He just thought it was “fitting” to cut it down to six-year-old size!

Wide is the couch that leads to destruction

To a kid with a saw, everything appears to need shortening.
This is a corollary to the saying that “to a kid with a hammer, everything looks like a nail.”

I think it’s cute how he wants to reshape the world.

I HATE painted furniture. Just give it a smooth sanding, a good stain, and a coat or two of varnish. Perfect!

We were allowed to do the inside of closets. With a brush, none of this namby pamby roller stuff. We then progressed to baseboards, however, we’re missing the point here, Calvin is a comic and therefore destined to be a sneaky rat fink for eternity.

Is Mom and Dad scared of our little darling Calvin ?

That is, MatureCanadian, until he uses his transmogrifier to create a good twin of himself and make things even more interesting for a while.

You’re couching your words in subtle nuances of meaning.
Calvin had a few ideas; he just wanted to narrow it down.
“Narrow is the way which leads unto life,…”

I saw Esau, sitting on a see-saw
I saw Esau with my girl
I saw Esau sitting on a see-saw
Giving her a merry whirl
When I saw Esau, he saw me
Then I saw red and got so sore
That I got a saw and I sawed Esau
Off that old see-saw!
Puddleglum2 said, 2 months ago
The ‘jig’ is up; Mom saw the saw!
She looks ‘cross’; she’s going to ‘rip’ into him good.

Oh, Puddleglum2! That was good. Mom seems to be ‘coping’ well today, and able to ‘hack’ it.
Now you’ve got me doing it.
Aardvark359 said, 2 months ago
It looks to me like Mom has tossed paint and brush all over in panel 3. I hope Calvin lets her know that throwing paint in the house is unacceptable behavior.
