My favourites are Donne, Keats, Shelley, Michael Madhusudhan Dutt, Rabindranath Tagore, Onono Komachi, Jayant Mahapatra, G.M. Muktibodh, Jibananda Das, Kipling, Nissim Ezekiel, and of course, my all-time favourite, Benjamin Zephaniah.

(Not that any of the readers of this strip would be familiar with any of the ones whose full names I mentioned.)

So, in attempt to make yourself appear knowledgeable on poetry and poets, you decide to be as supercilious as Bob?

If we’re talking about Trey’s taste in poets, the only one I bother listening to is Craig David. With poets like those, I prefer Kurt Cobain (a less-than-fully-realised John Donne of the modern age), Mars Bonfire, Chris Daughtry, Billie Holiday, Bob Dylan, Billie Joe Armstrong, Pierre Bouvier, Tom Petty and Bryan Adams.

But there’s a special place in my heart for Taylor Swift, the Twitter-age personification of every Bronte heroine with a heart to rival any of Jane Austen’s heroines.

(And I’m not being supercilious. Most of the readers of this strip have never heard of Michael Madhusudhan Dutt, Nissim Ezekiel, Jibananda Das, Onono Komachi, Nikki Giovanni, G.M. Muktibodh, Jayant Mahapatra or Benjamin Zephaniah, simply because most of them don’t write in English and the ones who do aren’t commonly known.)

Poetry is artwork done with words and sounds. Like all art, it has many forms and styles. Not every one enjoys all of the forms of poetry or art. What one person finds beautiful and thought-prevoking, another will think of it as poorly done graffiti. Either way it is still poetry. Not all poetry or art is well done, but still it remains poetry or art.
