Brevity is not only the soul of wit, it's also not your normal comics fare. In the hands of Dan, it is sharply intelligent, amusingly idiosyncratic and often uproariously funny.

I actually met…. well, not “met” …. let’s say “encountered” … a guy in those shoes, once…. lots of years ago.
True story!
Waiting alone for a 2 AM bus at 7th and Market in San Francisco…
if you knew SF you’d already be saying “bad idea”…
though it WAS a bit safer back then… but not safe.
Guy walked up in total pimp gear…
MUCH more tasteful than the guy in this strip….
all white, everything,
and skin tight….
He was probably 6’4"
in bare feet….
but he towered over me in tall white platform boots.
I was kinda scared….
Then he asked me if I knew what time the next bus would be to someplace I (whew!) wasn’t going….
so I gave him my bus schedule… and he smiled at me….
Then I noticed he had live goldfish in his clear shoe soles!
I was shocked…
I thought that was just in cartoons…
so I said “Um… nice boots.”
He gave me an even bigger smile…. and I felt relieved…
….till he very politely asked me….
if I’d like to turn a trick.
Oops.
But I said “No thanks.” and he left me alone. Whew again!

Varnes…. sorry the line is so long….
I had no idea…
I think you’re 972 now, if you’re still waiting….

@SusanSunshine: Jesus and Superfly are the only two I’ve ever seen walk on water, and you turned down a chance to learn the trick?

In 1968-1969 I lived on Eddy St. not far from Powell.
I’m sure I met that guy and a dozen more as bizarre and singular.
I had the time of my life.

There is a difference between turning a trick and learning a trick… subtle, but a difference none the less.

You saw Jesus walk on water? Just how old are you?

Thank you. I had never seen that clip before.
Jesse Jackson still seems to be everywhere, doesn’t he?
Black Moses refers to Isaac Hayes’ 1971 double album of that name. Ever after he was known by that name.

It’s a good thing the fish don’t see him or they would be long gone.
