    A serious question of grammar:

    Is it true that Americans don’t consider lettuce, cabbage, cauliflower or broccoli as countable nouns?

    Lettuce all join in a moment of silence for poor Mr. Iceberg.

    You might say “a lettuce” or “a cauliflower” or “a cabbage” but I’ve never heard “a broccolli” or “a celery” even here in Europe. I’ve heard “a bunch of celery”, but people just say “broccoli” with no qualifier. In English, anyway.

    Better to get it over with quick. It might be torture for a head of lettuce when you tear off a leaf at a time. If in fact it’s not already dead when picked. A question for philosophers to ponder. Vegetable aliens may come some day and wreak revenge for their slaughtered kindred! (“An intelligent carrot? The mind boggles!”)

    @Prof d'anglais

    These are not countable. Just like cake. Now, a head of lettuce, a stalk of celery, etc. are countable. Just like a slice of cake is countable.

    You can make 240 cakes for the Women’s Institute rally, though that’s a lotta cake!
