Yes, but never female. Apparently it had to do with the fact that the male collie is bigger and has a better coat. The females shed a lot and don’t look as “pretty” all the time, also (so I’m told) with a bigger dog you don’t see how much the child actor has grown from one season to another. So I’m told.
