I didn’t understand the phrase “purr like a kitten” until I had the extraordinary privilege of helping to raise a litter of eight kittens. When a kitten purrs, one does not hear any rhythm of breathing. It is just a steady, smooth bourdon, reminiscent of a well oiled chain drive.
My cat Oscar (a true Halloween black cat with a very “scary” meow, but he’s very lovable) purrs like he needs some mechanical attention – it sounds like his “purr motor” is rusty!
we lived in the country and I had a cat who had a litter of 7. as she was used to roaming because she’d been a farm cat, we let her out one night to go potty and she never came back. my mother sadly said she may have gotten hit by a car, she wouldn’t leave her kittens. so we bottle fed those kittens, using a doll’s baby bottle and an eyedropper! we kept 2 out of the 7. My friend’s cat used to sleep w/ me when I stayed at their house and he SNORED! :)
