Bloom County, a 1980s cartoon-comic strip that dealt with socio-political issues as seen through the eyes of highly exaggerated characters (e.g. Bill the Cat and Opus the Penguin) and humorous analogies.
Creator Berkeley Breathed's first regularly published strip, Academia Waltz, appeared in the Daily Texan in 1978. The strip attracted notice from the editors of the Washington Post who recruited him to do a nationally syndicated strip. On December 8, 1980, Bloom County made its debut and featured some of the characters from Academia Waltz, including former frat-boy Steve Dallas and the paraplegic Vietnam War veteran Cutter John.
Bloom County earned Berkeley the Pulitzer Prize for editorial cartooning in 1987. The strip eventually appeared in over 1,200 newspapers around the world until he retired the daily strip in 1989, stating, "A good comic strip is no more eternal than a ripe melon. The ugly truth is that in most cases, comics age less gracefully than their creators". The comic continues in recirculation on GoComics!

The Vega, one of the worst cars ever made.
artybee said, 8 months ago
Had a 71 Vega Kammback. Then I had a 74 Vega GT. (It was the only car they’d trade you for another Vega.)

Right up there with the Chevette and the Yugo.

vega was another dismal failure. that car is a great example of a rush job without using the proving ground. not to mention, chevy and gm hostility with each other during the 1970s. the rustproofing was crap, and finance would not add a plastic liner since it would add cost $2.28 per car. and, the engine was horrible. plus, the safety issues were right up there with the corvair, pinto, lancia, and mustang 2.

Today, it would be a Chevy Volt. But everything else is about right.

My Mom had a Vega. Not exactly at the top of the fondness scale when remembering our old cars.

@A SAINT – Always in return for the automaker promising to run lots of advertising during the year.
Looks like Binkley’s old man cut his shorts out of the Vega’s upholstery.

My first “new” car. Loved it but got hit by a non insured driver and totaled it after the first year I had it.

I grew up in, and then got my parent’s ’67 beetle. That car drove forever. When the new Beetles came out I was SO EXCITED! But it was nothing but trouble. Finally gave it up for my Honda fit, THAT car runs like the old beetle did.

Friend of mine had a Vega van, he pulled the motor and installed a V-8.
Surprise the hell out a lot of folks.

I have many fond memories that took place in the back seat of my moms Vega during my senior year of High School.

@Kitty
I HATE my Honda Fit. Runs fine, people always ask me how I like it. I always tell them its the most over-hyped, over-priced car I’ve ever owned. Why do I have it? Because it was only one of two models available & eligible when my other car went terminal two days before the Cash for Clunker program expired. The best car ever, all time for the dollar? A Toyota Rav 4.
