Aspiring cartoonist Nate Wright is the star of Big Nate, the daily and Sunday comic strip distributed by NEA since 1991. Nate is 11 years old, four-and-a-half feet tall, and the all-time record holder for detentions in school history. He's a self-described genius and sixth grade Renaissance Man. Nate, who lives with his dad and older sister, enjoys pestering his family and teachers with his sarcasm.

Mr. Peirce, how do Cartoonists like yourself get new ideas for so many years? You must eventually run out of ideas. How do you get your motivation?

I would guess, wanting to continue eating, that’s a great motivator!

Well, one of the truisms of cartooning is that there aren’t really any new ideas. Just about every joke you could ever think of has been told already, so the challenge is finding fresh ways to tell the same jokes. It’s a fun challenge each year to find a new angle on School Picture Day or Christmas or whatever the case may be. So that’s one part of my motivation. The other part, as OldestandWisest said, is keeping my family fed and keeping a roof over our heads. And paying my kids’ college tuition bills.

Nate needs to wear shades on his eyes. But then it would be harder to see him emote so eye black is fine. He also looks like what foot ball players use it too. Ancient Egyptians’ eye liner not only looked good on both sexes but helped to protect their eyes also.

Garfield keeps telling the same jokes and the way they’re told seems to be getting more and more the same.
garfieldfanclubpresident said, 10 months ago
@Mikal Harris
actually, once in 2011, garfield used the EXACT SAME comic strip as once and 2009
garfieldfanclubpresident said, 10 months ago
And I have read all of the garfield comic strips, so I should know about this. they don’t get the same, they are always a little different. but in some occasions, they are a little different. Either in ‘79 or in one of the 80s Garfield comics he has rubber arms. Then once in the 90’s or 00’s Garfields he has them again to turn up the thermostat.
