When I was a kid my brother and I would often do extra jobs for our parents in addition to our regular chores to augment our allowances. Then we went around to the neighbours and did the same thing, washing cars, mowing grass, shoveling snow in the winter. In this way we were able to buy things we couldn’t have otherwise. I think Betty is trying to teach her son something worthwhile. I hope she stops her husband from just giving the kid what he wants. He needs to learn how to work for what he wants.
