That book should read “U.S. Government Policy”! I mean, if the GOP Pledge to America is an Alternate Universe where reason, logic, and mathematics do not apply, then it doesn’t change anything from what we already have. I mean, this government already claims that making more red ink is the path to getting back in the black (something a fool with an abacus could disprove with hardly any effort)

@david: Why don’t I lend you an abacus and you can prove that a return to the policies of the Bush administration would improve everything? You have a short memory and impaired vision. Please don’t drool on my abacus.

I can’t say David is quite wrong - after all, right now people are saying that deficits matter yet we can’t allow tax cuts which would add 3 trillion USD to the debt in the next to years to expire.

On the other hand, state activity was one of the main reasons for the end of the Great Depression.

While the WPA and a number of Depression era programs did a lot of good, it ultimately took WWII to bring us out of it - and it helped that we were the only country left on earth with a functioning industrial capacity.

But then, when times got good we paid down our national debt.

3 republican administrations ran our national debt from a bit under $1 trillion to $11 trillion through good times and bad, never once demonstrating “fiscal responsibility” that they keep bleating about. Lib1 proudly claims that blowing a hole in our nation’s finances was Reagan’s great, secret master plan.

We’re starting now with a much heavier pack thanks to those skunks.

It also makes it harder for anyone who remembers the last 30 years to take this round of Republican pandering seriously.

^Too true. The problem is, we are a society with a very short attention span. If Glenn Beck or Sarah Palin say it loud enough, it must be true.

I love this Sargent has really stepped up. The character is tired of Bizaro world so the store clerk gives him something that is real.

Don’t worry Meetinthemiddle if the Republicans fail to fix things we will kick them out in to years. That is the beauty of the system.

well, How, someone had to pay the bills on the money Bush borrowed to finance his personal vendetta against Sadaam. The dems are just in office as the Chinese come to collect the check. And the interest. I guess they get blamed. could explain the MC-Palin fiasco.

Let the Dems “win” and pick up the check. the public has the attention span of a Lindsey Lohan night out and thinks the dems are the ones who ran up the bill. Might actually work. seems to have for several of you. Unless you’re paid shills.

    • I think you read it backward.

I don’t agree with Ben Sargent, but at least it’s funny.

Um, jack, they’re saying the Pledge to America is a REALLY bizarre fantasy, not a reality.

We had a good run of prosperity some years back. Some of it was because we didn’t pay the bills as we went along.
What were we doing that worked and was fiscally responsible?

i had something shown me: whenever the republicans ran congress, the shortfall descreased (a-la Clinton era), and when the democrats ran it, they ran it into the ground (reagan, king george the 1st and second term of george the 2nd up to present day). and geuss who crafts the budget this country is bleeding to death from? both houses of congress. democrats. state congress/assemblies, governors, are held by a democrat majority of the states as well. look at what a fiscal wreck michigan and illinois have become. take a gander at mass’s version of obamacare, and the disemboweled state funding for that mess. it’ll give you an idea of what a horror story the usa budget will look like in 5 years. democrats. thank you for letting me rant.

Dave, it’s not a book, the guy is in a video game store. Observation is important, and lacking in those supporting the right wing myths. They’ve been gaming folks for a long time, at least since Nixon, and the real world includes Agnew, Quayle and “W” for a distorted (and disturbing) theme they call “brilliance”. Yes, alternate universe deprived of logic, reason and even valid mathematics, indeed.
