My husband and I do 1770s reenacting and we have different things to start conversations with boys or girls and their families. Normally it is warm weather so this is easy to do. We do one event which is in December, at night, and by candlelight. We can usually guess if a child is a girl or boy, but this past December it was so cold and the kids (and their parents) were so covered up (as they were walking building to building around a restored village at night in temperatures down to 9F) that we could not tell one sex from the other and had to come up with all new unisex introductions to work with the children.
I know how Ben feels.
