The growing process often depends on your neighbor’s cat.

A friend built a big fish pond and spent big bucks on full grown koi to go in it. Racoons cleaned it out in one night.

If these are goldfish they could get big enough eventually to crawl back to the house and attack them. At my college, kids would dump goldfish into the local pond and they grew to 3 to 4 feet long each. They had to drain the pond to kill them.

Just above a local dam, they found a 12" orange carp a number of years ago. Once they did a DNA test on it, they realized it was a goldfish that someone had dumped into the reservoir behind the dam. With that large a bowl in which to swim, it grew to the limits of its environment.
