Reading a book while she has a visitor? Not only is Gracie obnoxious, she has go grace.

Being smart isn’t annoying. Smart people being condescending is what’s annoying.

Amen. It isn’t because Gracie is smart that she’s irritating. It’s that she rubs everyone’s face in it.

So…she should hide her light under a bushel? I do not find Gracie rude, condescending, or irritating (except as it relates to her brother) She is eagerly involved in learning, and I find that delightful.

Look at that musty old tome she’s paging through. That must be Winston Churchill’s “A History of the English-Speaking Peoples.”

But it is okay for great athletes to rub their superiority in other people faces? Sports are celebrated, intelligence is denigrated.

The thing is, she never seems happy with learning things for their own sake. It’s always part of a narrative in which she’s talking about how she’s different (and, it is implied, better) than other kids.

    Here’s the difference:

Kid One: Wow! Did you know that gravity is what holds planets in an orbit? And that you can use math to predict how those orbits will decay? It’s so cool!

Kid Two: I really like reading about gravity, unlike all those other kids. It’s going to help me get into college.

    Gracie is Kid Two.
