From the salmon-colored sofa that is the center of the Arlo & Janis universe, this unique and quixotic comic strip has been just about everywhere. From unvarnished human drama to flights of unfettered comic fantasy, from unabashed pathos to unsurpassed observational wit, Arlo & Janis is perhaps the most unpigenholeable comic strip ever. It also invents new words!
The characters Arlo and Janis have played the parts of mermaids, squirrels, alligators and grasshoppers over the years, all while exploring the unexaggerated human condition and managing to become, with their son Gene, perhaps the most believable family in the funny pages. This unique approach has garnered Arlo & Janis an intelligent and engaged readership and guaranteed that a percentage of it will be confused at any given moment. However, readers eagerly return every day for another quaff from what has been the holy grail for a generation of comic-strip authors: quintessential Boomer humor.

Oh the horror of it all!

I must be dim, ‘cause I don’t think I get this one either. Did the dog have a wee at the snow catman? Is it a live cat covered in snow? What’s the significance of snowless bit of road surface, or the Bolshevik and the levitating dog? Arlo looks outraged, rather than shocked, so my first assumption of a road accident is probably false.
Dammit, this is approaching Cow Tools territory levels of incomprehensibility for me.

A “wee” on the snowcat would cause significant, immediate melting.

Arlo is shielding the cat from seeing the death of the snowman cat as it melts. The patch of road is to show that the snow is melting.

Poor snow cat, I’d have thought that the dog was adding insult to injury.

Apparently some of the more naive readers have never heard of the adage that dog piss is poison. That applies to snow cats as well as to lawns.

I thought the road and sidewalk were just to show the proximity of the snowcat to insulting passers-by. Didn’t realize anything about poison and melting.

Zipper the wonder dog, my chocolate Labrador, wants to leave his calling card on every tree and fire hydrant we walk pass.

According to today’s Red and Rover it’s a sign the dog really liked it.

I would go with the dog marking his territory on the snow cat..
.
Thus Arlo covering Ludwig’s eyes.

I love Arlo & Janis, but it seems like lately, I don’t understand the strip.

The dog pissed on the snow cat. Arlo covered Ludwig’s eyes so he didn’t have the image of the cat melting under the stream like the Wicked Witch of the West.
