From the salmon-colored sofa that is the center of the Arlo & Janis universe, this unique and quixotic comic strip has been just about everywhere. From unvarnished human drama to flights of unfettered comic fantasy, from unabashed pathos to unsurpassed observational wit, Arlo & Janis is perhaps the most unpigenholeable comic strip ever. It also invents new words!
The characters Arlo and Janis have played the parts of mermaids, squirrels, alligators and grasshoppers over the years, all while exploring the unexaggerated human condition and managing to become, with their son Gene, perhaps the most believable family in the funny pages. This unique approach has garnered Arlo & Janis an intelligent and engaged readership and guaranteed that a percentage of it will be confused at any given moment. However, readers eagerly return every day for another quaff from what has been the holy grail for a generation of comic-strip authors: quintessential Boomer humor.

Of course…. there’s the small matter of berthage…. and hauling out, painting, bottom jobs…
racing to the coast to inspect storm damage….
loving a night in the cozy little cabin is easy…
loving your boat while standing in the mud scraping barnacles means your heart is in it.
Now that I think about it….
it’s a metaphor for truly loving another person….
not just the cute parts.

He’s got her right where he wants her.
And it’s got nothing to do with buying the boat.

Don’t bang your head. Ceilings are low in small boats.

Shame they took the smile away in box two and three, kind of kills the effect.

Between Arlo and Janis and Gene and girl, this boat has been a pretty ’rockin place.

Are they retired? I never see them working.

@riverhawk
No. Once in a while a strip will show Arlo at the office. And when Arlo gets too frisky in the morning, Janis sometimes declares that they have to go to work (so no time for hijinks).

I think that’s the whole point of this strip. A boat has been Arlo’s dream forever, but now that it’s under serious consideration he has to think about the reality of owning a boat, not just the fantasy of owning a boat. He’s having second thoughts.

No, Arlo is just ensuring he has Janis’ whole-hearted support. He’s letting her believe that it was her idea.

I don’t think he’s having second thoughts .. I just think he’s enjoying having Janis take the lead in saying they should get the boat and fulfill his lifelong dream. His dead-pan look is hiding his yelling “yaaaayyyyyyy!!!!” inside.

Does the bottom job include the bottom getting painted? Whose? Do they use turpentine? Poor Arlo.
