When do they reveal his petrol-powered elbow?

I wonder if von Jagow is tortured in the interrogation room, while Agent Gates is almost drenched in tears by the overwhelming feel of his self-importance.

After a man left of his free own will you shout after him to “just skip it” from a save distance, when he can’t hear you anymore.
    What courage!

Actually, I think that is steam escaping from the motor of the leg. Maybe the leg is normally in the shutdown mode and is only active for a short space in time. Otherwise the damp pants ann the steam cloud would be noticeable.

But it might be handy to clear any wrinkles…

Now you have infected me with your search for a plausible power source for Gates’ leg.
The steam driven leg gives a good story but will not work in reality.
What about a kind of blank cartridges? If a .45 blank cartridge is not powerful enough, a rifle blank could be used. The cartridges could be stored in a magazine for repeated use of the leg in short time intervals.
The blank in the chamber could be triggered by a wide choice of activators, using a Bowden cable. The reloading mechanism would be the same as with an automatic pistol.
The artificial leg itself would act as a silencer. No steam, no heat, if the leg is not used.
A little gun-smoke afterwards is all that one could notice.
