The Academia Waltz was Berke Breathed's first cartoon, published daily from 1978 to 1979 in The Daily Texan at The University of Texas at Austin, where he was a student. The strip focused primarily on college life, although it sometimes made references to big news stories of the time (such as the incident at Three Mile Island in 1979).

Met him at the Tattered Cover in Denver. A handle of Wild Turkey would get you cuts in line at book signings and ~60 seconds of face time and one drink. Left the bottle and left happy. Treasured memory. RIP.

Ya well Trudeau telling Berke not to copy him? Screw off. Trudeau didn’t invent speech lines. I always liked Breathed’s artwork better too.
