Rancorous bosses, quirky workers, and an up-and-down stock market populate the world of 9 to 5. A cast of regular characters include J.B. Wells (the boss), Sims (office flunkey), and Ms. Forbes. While mainly a satire on business, the comic also pokes fun at technology, relationships, dogs and cats, and life in general. The cartoon is by Harley Schwadron, whose business cartoons have appeared in Playboy, Barrons, and many other top publications for many years.

I like 9 to 5, but this one disappoints me. It is trying to be culturally funny, but an abacus would never be down, unless you physically broke it. That is kind of the point of non-digital/non-computerized equipment.

Seems to me you’re missing the point of the cartoon
It’s funny precisely because an abacus can’t be down

Sorry, to be a wet blanket, friend, but I thought the same thing as jeffc42. I have a photo of my work computer with a note on the screen that says, “In case of power failure, slide beads.” The abacus is below the monitor in that photo.

I took it exactly the way you did and thought it was funny. Any excuse for a day off.

I thought it was funny too. Humor oftentimes stems from absurd situations, and this one is all right.

At first I thought this was an unfair stereotype of the Chinese work ethic, then saw it said N. America branch. So it turns out to be a reverse stereotype. Funny, if you don’t get wrapped in the political correctness of it all.

I understand the humour, but not every cartoon is going to appeal to every reader. This one kindsa polarizes us. I will admit that I smiled the second time I saw it.

It’ll break if I drop my digitized anvil on it.
