I read an article in Entertainment Weekly on this subject, and apparently there WAS widespread panic among the fanboys when Keaton’s name was first announced. The difference was that they didn’t have email and twitter, so they actually had to use the U.S. Mail to complain…
Most of them probably got over it. I don’t recall what the response was when Val Kilmer took over from Keaton, but I know there was also discontent when Clooney donned the cowl. All these, of course were reactions to the announcements of the casting, before a single frame of celluloid was shot.
